The mission of Belfast Flying Shoes is to bolster the spirited dance and music community in Midcoast Maine. According to our bylaws, the purpose of our nonprofit public benefit corporation is to promote the presentation, preservation, perpetuation, participatory enjoyment, and continuing evolution of traditional folk dance and music.

We fulfill this mission and purpose by producing a variety of programs in our region, including workshops and dances, as well as participatory dance & music programs for students and staff in preK-12 schools, older adults, and incarcerated men.

Since inception, our core program has been a public dance series: The First Friday BFS Community Dance, Social Break, and Contra Dance. All are welcome!  New dancers, experienced dancers, musicians, families, friends, and community members of all ages collaborate to create the monthly magic under the disco ball.

The Community Dance – Fun and simple dances, such as those presented at weddings or schools. Calling by Chrissy Fowler & Lisa Newcomb. Music by the All-Comers Band, open to all ages, instruments, and experience levels.

The Social Break – A sociable half-hour between the Community and Contra dances, with emphasis on strengthening community connections through shared conversation.

The Contra Dance – Zesty dances and tunes in a program of contras and squares presented by a variety of talented callers and musicians.
