Belfast Flying Shoes is taking traditional participatory social dancing beyond the confines of four walls and a floor – we’re bringing it outdoors! Our “Dancing in the Park” series continues on Saturday, July 27, at 4:00 pm at City Park. (Rain date July 28)
Chrissy Fowler and Lisa Newcomb will call dances to lively fiddle tunes played by the Don Roy Trio (Don Roy, Cindy Roy, and Jay Young). These participatory New England social dances are for all ages and experience levels, and dancers are encouraged to bring friends and family.
It’s a special treat to have Franco-American musicians Don and Cindy Roy play for this dance. In 2018, they were awarded the nation’s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts—the NEA National Heritage Fellowship. (More on the Roys in this heartwarming video produced by the National Endowment for the Arts.)
Besides kicking off your flying shoes to dance, you could spend the whole day at City Park. Bring a picnic lunch or supper. Roam the park, from the horseshoe pit and gazebo up to the tennis/pickleball/basketball courts. Cool off in the pool or in the bay. Kids of all ages love the special playground area and the shore at low tide.
